Nepal Unrest: Protesters Ransack Ministers' Homes; Demand Fresh Elections Amid Corruption Claims

Unrest has spread across Nepal, moving beyond the capital, Kathmandu. Protests, initially sparked by a government ban on social media, are now fuelled by deeper public anger against corruption, nepotism, and unemployment. The residences of several political figures, including the President and the Energy Minister, have been attacked and vandalized, with money reportedly stolen from the latter’s home. The Nepalese Congress office in Kathmandu has also been targeted. Protesters are demanding fresh elections. According to Manish Jha, spokesperson for the Rashtriya Svatantrita Party, the core issue is not the social media ban but long-standing dissatisfaction, stating, “The angerness, disappointment and dissatisfaction against current coalition government we started raising up since like few months.” He also noted the death toll has crossed 22. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has called for an all-party meeting, while reports suggest he might be preparing to leave the country.
