Violent protests have erupted across Nepal, including in Kathmandu and Birganj, leading to at least 20 deaths and 400 injuries. The unrest, initially linked to a government ban on social media, is now understood to be a ‘Gen Z Revolution’ fueled by deeper public anger against systemic corruption, unemployment, and issues in the education sector. A social activist stated, ‘it was a cumulative frustration over the period of years which has made the generation come on the street and speak against the system.’ The government has since lifted the social media ban, but tensions remain high as the initially youth-led protests are now joined by older citizens. Amid the chaos, there are unconfirmed reports that Nepal’s Prime Minister may be leaving for Dubai. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory urging its citizens in Nepal to exercise caution.
