Nepal Protests: 20 Dead, 250+ Injured As Youth Clash With Police Over Social Media Ban | India Today

Deadly protests have erupted across Nepal, resulting in 20 fatalities and over 300 injuries after police opened fire on demonstrators. A massive, youth-led movement, identified as a ‘Gen Z revolution,’ has taken to the streets of Kathmandu and other cities. Protesters are demonstrating against the government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and X, which the government, led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, states is a regulatory measure. Demonstrators, however, view the ban as a clampdown on free speech and a method to conceal corruption. Chants to "ban corruption and not social media" have been prominent amidst growing calls for the Prime Minister’s resignation. The unrest is fueled by long-standing grievances including corruption, unemployment, nepotism, and a lack of opportunities for the nation’s youth. Nepal’s Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, has offered to resign. The government has deployed the army and imposed curfews in key areas, holding an emergency cabinet meeting to address the escalating crisis. The situation remains critical, with parallels being drawn to other regional protests that resulted in regime change. #nepalprotests #socialmediaban #studentprotest #itwebvideos #kathmandu #genz #digitalrights #youthuprising #standwithnepal #freedomofspeech #anticorruption #nepalnews #southasia #currentaffairs #indiatoday #letusbreathe #corruption #humanrights #politicalcrisis #regimechange
