Two popular leaders in Nepal have formed an alliance ahead of the parliamentary elections on 5 March, aiming to challenge the dominant parties that have governed the Himalayan nation for over three decades.
Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, a rapper-turned-Kathmandu mayor, has joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by former TV host and politician Rabi Lamichhane. Balen has been openly critical of India’s regional role, signalling a bold stance in Nepal’s foreign policy debate.
The alliance also reflects the growing influence of younger voters, with nearly one million new voters added following recent protests. While some critics question the leaders’ past controversies, their alliance could present a serious challenge to the long-established Communist Party of Nepal (UML) and the centrist Nepali Congress party.
