The unrest, driven by young protesters, is fueled by anger over governance, a recent social media ban, and corruption. Tear gas and water cannons have been used by authorities to control the crowds. In an interview, Nepali Congress member and senior journalist Gopal Jha stated that the populace wants "correction in the system" rather than its complete overhaul. He also suggested the involvement of other elements in the violence, saying, "there is infiltration and some elements are trying to face in muddy water."
