Nepal: 61 Dead in Violence As First Female Interim PM Sushila Karki Takes Charge

Violence erupted in Nepal on September 9th, leading to a rising death toll that has now reached 61, with six bodies recovered today in Kathmandu. Amidst the chaos following what is being called the ‘Gen Z revolution’, Sushila Karki has taken charge as the interim Prime Minister, a historic moment as she is the first woman to hold the office in Nepal. The new government’s priorities include restoring law and order, rebuilding the nation, and tackling corruption, which was a primary cause of the unrest. A key challenge will be ensuring free and fair elections are held in six months. A speaker noted the revolution began because "those who were responsible, who were given responsibility to listen to the anger and frustration of the common people, they refuse to do so." The interim government will be supported by a ‘Genzi Advisory Committee’.
