All eyes will be on TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu and JDU’s Nitish Kumar as the newly elected MPs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meet today to take calls on government formation. The two leaders emerged as kingmakers after the BJP failed to cross the halfway mark needed to form a government in its own right. Both the parties now seeking key portfolios in the new cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After the meeting today, PM Modi is expected to present his claim to form a new coalition government, sources have said.
The NDA won 293 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The BJP, which enjoyed a handsome majority in the previous two terms, secured only 240 seats, way behind the 272 mark needed to form a government.
