The text now describes Babur as a “brutal and ruthless conqueror,” Akbar’s rule as a “blend of brutality and tolerance,” and notes Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of temples and gurudwaras. To address the sensitivity of this material, NCERT added a disclaimer stating, “No one should be held responsible today for events of the past.” In a related development, the Uttarakhand government, led by Pushkar Singh Dhami, has asked NCERT to include the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana in the syllabus for 17,000 government schools.
