NCERT Rewrites Mughal History; Gita, Ramayana Pushed For Uttarakhand Schools | India Today

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has updated its Class VIII Social Science textbook, detailing religious intolerance and violence during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods. The text now describes Babur as a “brutal and ruthless conqueror,” Akbar’s rule as a “blend of brutality and tolerance,” and notes Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of temples and gurudwaras. To address the sensitivity of this material, NCERT added a disclaimer stating, “No one should be held responsible today for events of the past.” In a related development, the Uttarakhand government, led by Pushkar Singh Dhami, has asked NCERT to include the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana in the syllabus for 17,000 government schools. This move has met with opposition from the state’s teaching community, citing Article 28 of the Constitution, which prohibits religious instruction in state-funded schools. #ncert #textbookcontroversy #mughalhistory #itwebvideos #indianhistory #education #syllabus #uttarakhand #pushkarsinghdhami #bhagavadgita #ramayana #school #babur #akbar #aurangzeb #indiatoday
