In an exclusive interaction with Republic, Indian national MMA champion Varun Sanyal said that mixed martial arts could well be something that Indian wrestlers look to as a future career, mainly due to the demands of the sport.
Historically, fighters who have a strong base in the sport of amateur wrestling have excelled in the UFC as well as other promotions of MMA. Varun argues that India has many a top wrestler who could look to MMA as a career.
While amateur sportspeople tend to dream of Olympic medals, they may not be able to sustain that career forever and MMA, in Varun’s opinion, offers them an alternative career that they could thrive in.
