NASA Says Mars Rovers Must Dig Deeper to Find Life | WION Podcast

A new NASA lab experiment suggests that signs of alien life on Mars may be buried deeper than current rovers can reach. Scientists found that cosmic rays likely destroyed amino acids — key indicators of life — near the planet’s surface over millions of years. To find preserved evidence, future missions may need to dig at least 6.6 feet below the surface. Current rovers only drill about two inches deep, which may not be enough. The study, published in the journal Astrobiology, urges a new approach to Mars exploration. Deeper drilling or targeting younger impact sites could be the key to finally uncovering life on the Red Planet.
