NASA has uncovered a dramatic new structure jutting out from the Milky Way’s Sagittarius Arm, made up of young stars and star-forming clouds. Stretching around 3,000 light-years, this formation stands out with a steep 60-degree angle—far greater than the usual 12-degree pitch of the galaxy’s spiral arms. Using infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and precise star distances from ESA’s Gaia mission, scientists revealed this spur-like structure moving uniformly through space. Such features have been seen in other spiral galaxies, but this is a rare discovery for our own. The finding could reshape our understanding of the Milky Way’s structure and formation.
