NASA’s satellites have captured a rare space-based view of a massive tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The 8.8-magnitude quake sent waves rippling across the Pacific, even as coastlines were largely spared. Using data from NASA’s SWOT satellite and NOAA’s deep-ocean sensors, scientists mapped the rupture and tracked how the wave spread. The imagery revealed a tsunami stretching nearly 120 kilometres wide. The findings also shed new light on seismic stress left behind by a deadly earthquake decades earlier.
