A secret moon may be responsible for the mysterious rings surrounding a celestial rock known as Chariklo. Scientists discovered that a tiny moonlet, as small as 1 kilometer in diameter, can maintain gossamer rings similar to Chariklo’s. The moonlet shapes and keeps the rings tidy by inducing perturbations. Chariklo, a minor planet orbiting the Sun between Jupiter and Neptune, exhibits two thin rings. Researchers conducted N-body simulations to understand how the rings are maintained. The findings suggest that small moons can play a significant role in shaping ring systems.
