Two powerful earthquakes of 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, at approximately 12:50 PM local time, with its epicentre located near Sagaing, just 16 kilometres northwest of the town.
The earthquake’s depth was recorded at 10 kilometres, and tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, prompting residents to rush into the streets in panic as buildings swayed and swimming pools overflowed.
In Thailand, reports indicate at least three deaths and several casualties. In Myanmar, unconfirmed reports raise the possibility of hundreds of deaths, with the true scale of the destruction unknown thus far. Why is the region so prone to earthquakes?
