Mumbai’s deteriorating air quality index has sparked serious concerns, with activists questioning the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s accountability despite being one of India’s richest civic bodies. D Stalin, an intervener in the air quality case at the Bombay High Court, attributes the pollution primarily to suspended particulate matter from infrastructure projects and endless construction activities. He highlights that dust particles remain trapped due to Mumbai’s congested urban layout, which prevents wind circulation. He criticises the coastal road project for exposing residents to vehicular emissions and unmanaged excavated material. He points out basic housekeeping failures such as lack of covering excavated areas, inadequate water spraying, and tree felling that removes natural dust barriers. Stalin also suggests using treated sewage water for road washing and calls for stricter enforcement by the BMC and intervention from the Central Pollution Control Board to ensure permanent closure of non-compliant sites.
