A tragic accident in Mumbai’s Mulund area has claimed the life of one person and left three others injured after an under-construction metro pillar collapsed on an auto-rickshaw. The victims, tourists from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, were traveling along LBS Road when a concrete segment fell in broad daylight. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde acknowledged the lapse, stating, ‘If I get to know from madam that the paraffin ball was fitted here yesterday, then the safety of the barricades and the safety norms, have they followed them or not?’ Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a high-level probe into the incident and announced an ex-gratia of 5 lakh rupees for the victim’s family. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has halted all construction work at the site as investigations continue. Opposition leaders, including Sena UBT MLA Aditya Thackeray, have demanded strict accountability for the contractor and officials involved, calling the incident a result of preventable negligence.
