Iranian state media reports that Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in an airstrike reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel.
Reports say Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba Khamenei during a virtual meeting. He is known to have strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was considered a powerful influence behind the scenes during his father’s leadership.
Although not a senior cleric and without any official government post earlier, he played a role in key political decisions. He was sanctioned by the United States in 2019.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that any new supreme leader chosen by the regime would be targeted.
A three-day memorial ceremony for Ali Khamenei will begin at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran, and he will be buried in Mashhad, his birthplace.
