Can India be the possible peacemaker? Prime minister Narendra Modi has sure cast himself in that role well. two and a half years after Russia invaded and weeks into a major Ukrainian counter-offensive into Russian territory….PM Modi is trying to pull of a very delicate diplomatic balancing act. In Kyiv he said it loud and clear, "India was never neutral in this war, on side of peace".
PM Modi also added "India stands by Ukraine". He also chose to highlight India’s consistent efforts to advocate for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict. The tone and tenor remains the same….but there is a very clear assurance of support for Ukraine for any step taken toward peace.
Just ahead of his visit PM Modi said "No problem can be resolved on a battlefield" adding that "India supports dialogue and diplomacy for restoration of peace and stability as soon as possible".
Although he is the first Indian premier to visit Ukraine, even this unique feat won’t make to road to his end goal easy. a diplomatic breakthrough between Moscow and Kyiv looks more elusive than ever following Ukraine’s shock offensive into Russia’s western Kursk region.
It is also unclear whether PM Modi himself could be an effective dealmaker, seen by many in Ukraine as too close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
