Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the Maldives on July 25th and 26th, where he will be the guest of honour at the nation’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. This visit marks a significant reset in bilateral ties, which came under severe strain after President Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took office in November 2023. Relations had soured following a diplomatic chill in January 2024, triggered by comments from Maldivian ministers regarding the Prime Minister’s visit to Lakshadweep. The fallout saw Indian tourists, who were number one in 2023, drop to sixth place by 2025. Now, Modi becomes the first head of government hosted by President Muizzu, a development showing how India’s calculated moves have aimed to rewrite the regional power equation. Several India-assisted development projects are set to be inaugurated during the visit.
