MIT researchers, along with undergraduate students, have discovered three of the oldest known stars in the Milky Way’s halo. These stars, named SASS (Small Accreted Stellar System stars), are estimated to be 12 to 13 billion years old. Scientists believe each star once belonged to a tiny, ancient galaxy that was later absorbed by the growing Milky Way. Their low chemical signatures and retrograde motion suggest they originated from outside the galaxy. These stars offer new insights into the early universe and galaxy formation. This breakthrough could help trace our cosmic family tree like never before.
