The Indian Air Force is preparing to retire its legendary MiG-21 fighter jet, first inducted in 1963. A grand farewell ceremony is scheduled for this Friday at the Chandigarh Air Force Station, marking the end of the aircraft’s 62-year operational journey. The Soviet-era jet, a backbone of India’s air power, played crucial roles in the 1965 and 1971 wars, and more recently in 2019 when it downed a Pakistani F-16. The send-off will include flypasts and a water cannon salute, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and former air chiefs in attendance. The formal decommissioning will be marked by the handing over of the jet’s log book. Reflecting on the aircraft’s legacy, one speaker stated, "It’s not only a personal emotional moment but also for all the pilots who’ve flown." The event signifies a major transition for the air force as it turns a page of its history.
