Mig-21 To Be Retired After 62 Years In Service With Grand Farewell Ceremony | India Today News

The Indian Air Force’s MiG-21 fighter jets are being retired after 62 years of service, marked by a grand farewell ceremony in Chandigarh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, top military leaders, and veterans gathered for the event. The ceremony featured a fly-past in Panther and Badal formations, a dogfight demonstration between Jaguars and a MiG-21, and an aerobatic display by the Surya Kiran team. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh participated by flying a sortie. The jets received a traditional water cannon salute. Inducted in 1963, the MiG-21 played a significant role in the 1965 and 1971 wars, and more recently in 2019 following the Balakot strikes. The retirement also brings to a close the debate over the aircraft’s safety record, following over 400 crashes. An emotional sentiment was shared by veterans, with a reporter noting, "They say if the MiG-21 was a person, they would have hugged it and said goodbye."
