The Indian Air Force is retiring its MiG-21 fighter jets after 62 years of service in a ceremony at Chandigarh Air Force Station attended by the Defence Minister and Air Chief. The aircraft had a formidable legacy in numerous operations but also faced severe criticism for their safety record. A speaker in the transcript highlighted this, stating, "in last 62 years, MiG-21s have witnessed around more than 400 accidents." The phasing out of the final two MiG-21 squadrons will decrease the IAF’s fighter strength to 29 squadrons, the lowest since 1962. To counter this, a deal for 97 additional LCA Tejas Mark 1A aircraft, designed to replace the MiG-21, was signed with HAL a day prior to the ceremony.
