Explosions in West Asia triggered a sharp sell-off on Indian markets, with the Nifty falling 900 points and the Sensex plunging 7,228 points at the open, wiping out nearly Rs 8 lakh crore in minutes. Aviation stocks crash-landed as Dubai, the world’s second-busiest international hub, shut down, while Abu Dhabi and Doha faced disruptions. Indian carriers announced mass cancellations on Gulf routes, their busiest international corridors. Indian exporters, already recovering from US tariffs, face fresh uncertainty, particularly in agriculture, rice shipments, paints, tyres, chemicals and fertilisers. Infrastructure major L&T, with 37 per cent of its order book tied to the Gulf, slipped 6 per cent. Investors flocked to gold and silver, with silver surging nearly Rs 12,000 and gold climbing around Rs 6,000. The rupee slipped past the 91 mark against the dollar. Crude oil prices breached $82 a barrel, posting their biggest overnight jump in four years, amid fears around the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil demand is transported. European markets also fell broadly.
