A gunman rammed a vehicle into Temple Israel, the largest reformed synagogue in the United States, located in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, and opened fire on Thursday. Authorities were called shortly before 1pm local time after emergency calls reported a car smashing into the building. The vehicle appeared to have intentionally driven into the synagogue complex and caught fire after crashing. The attacker, armed with a rifle, opened fire and was shot dead by synagogue security officials during the confrontation. The vehicle reportedly contained mortar-type explosives, which caused the fire at the temple. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said investigators are looking into the motive behind the incident. The Jewish Federation of Detroit announced on Facebook that its affiliated institutions had been placed under precautionary lockdown following the incident. The identity of the gunman has not yet been revealed. Aerial footage showed thick smoke rising from the synagogue’s roof as several police vehicles gathered around the building.
