Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel known as ‘El Mencho’, has been killed during a military operation in Mexico. The fugitive drug lord succumbed to injuries sustained during a raid in Tapalpa, Jalisco, and died during an air transfer to Mexico City. Journalist Carlos Jara reported that the cartel is one of the ‘biggest in the world’ with operations spanning Africa, Europe, and North America. Following the news, widespread retaliatory violence broke out across several Mexican states, including Jalisco, where gunmen torched vehicles and blocked major highways. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that federal authorities are coordinating with state governments to manage the unrest. The United States had previously designated the cartel as a terrorist organization and offered a 15 million dollar reward for El Mencho’s capture. Visuals from the region show chaos at airports and arson attacks on petrol pumps as cartel members react to the death of their leader.
