A political rift has emerged in Tamil Nadu’s ruling alliance over proposed metro rail projects for Coimbatore and Madurai. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of the DMK is championing the expansion, citing future growth, but is facing opposition from within his own alliance. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has publicly questioned the viability of such projects in tier-2 cities. According to the report, Karti Chidambaram’s view is that ‘metro is not even needed in tier two cities and that it is a complete waste of expense in such cities and it’s only required in metropolitan cities like Chennai’. This disagreement highlights the growing friction between the DMK and Congress, especially as the DMK, led by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, criticises the Centre for rejecting the proposals based on population criteria.
