Speaking at the India Today Conclave, Signal Foundation President Meredith Whittaker asserted that the only effective way to ensure data privacy is to not collect it in the first place. Whittaker detailed how Signal, a nonprofit organization, operates on an annual budget of approximately $50 million, funded by donors, to provide a messaging service with comprehensive end-to-end encryption that covers all user data, including metadata. She contrasted this with other platforms that may encrypt message content but still gather metadata. Whittaker affirmed Signal’s commitment to privacy, stating the organization is architecturally unable to comply with government data requests and fights every subpoena. She warned that creating encryption backdoors for state access, as seen with the Salt Typhoon hack, compromises security for everyone and advocated for holding tech companies accountable for their data practices rather than individuals.
