In an interview at India Today Conclave, Melati Wijsen, the environmental activist who started the ‘Bye Bye Plastic Bags’ campaign in Bali at age 12, discussed the gap between policy and implementation in environmental activism. Despite Bali passing a law banning plastic bags, straws, and styrofoam in 2019, she revealed that ‘plastic bags are actually still the number one item that is found in our environment’. Now 25, Wijsen emphasized the need for intergenerational collaboration, stating, ‘We cannot solve the problem with the same thinking that created it’. She spoke about her online learning platform YouthTopia, which has 10,000 students worldwide learning from frontline young changemakers. Wijsen also advocated for focusing on solutions rather than problems, and stressed the importance of building diverse teams and maintaining hope as an active practice in activism.
