Medical Tourism Hit By West Asia War, Rise of Weight-Loss Drugs | Healthcare | Sneha Mordani

India’s medical tourism industry has witnessed a significant decline due to the escalating West Asia war, with hospitals reporting an average 30 percent drop in international patient footfall, particularly from countries like Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and Yemen. Hospital chains are experiencing a 50 to 75 percent drop in international inflows, with Fortis Healthcare expecting a 15 to 20 percent revenue hit. The segment faces challenges from flight cancellations, closed airspace, and airfares rising by 15 to 20 percent. Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide patent expiry in India is set to transform the obesity and diabetes treatment landscape, allowing Indian pharmaceutical companies to launch generic GLP-1 medicines at least 50 percent cheaper. The market is expected to grow from seven billion rupees to 50 billion rupees by 2030. However, concerns have been raised about the drug approval process and potential misuse. Additionally, the LPG shortage crisis has forced people, particularly roadside food vendors, to revert to firewood, raising concerns about indoor air pollution, respiratory diseases, and increased carbon emissions.
