A 20-year-old student’s death by self-immolation in Balasore, Odisha, has led to widespread protests. The student took the extreme step after her repeated complaints of harassment against a college professor were allegedly ignored by the college principal and authorities. According to the report, inaction from the authorities is what led to her death: "the principal’s inaction, the college authority’s inaction has taken the life of the girl." In the aftermath, the Odisha police have arrested the college principal and the Head of Department. The Biju Janata Dal is holding protests over the incident, and the Congress has called for an Odisha bandh on July 17th.
