Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney begins his first official visit to India, marking a significant step in resetting bilateral ties after a prolonged period of diplomatic strain. The two-day visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, focuses on trade and investment, energy and critical minerals, agriculture cooperation, education, research and innovation, and stronger people-to-people ties. Carney begins his tour in Mumbai on February 27, meeting Indian and Canadian CEOs and industrial leaders. On March 1, he arrives in Delhi for delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House on March 2, where both Prime Ministers will review the full spectrum of India-Canada strategic ties. The visit comes after relations deteriorated following September 2023, when the Trudeau government linked India to the Nijjar killing, leading to suspended visa services and diplomat expulsions. Relations began improving after the June 2025 Modi-Carney meeting in Kananaskis and a crucial November 2025 meeting in Johannesburg.
