When Manu Bhaker scripted history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by becoming the first-ever Indian athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics, it was something that was celebrated by everyone. But Manu is not content to just focus on her sport, as she proved in an interesting chat with the Republic SportFit podcast.
Manu opened up on a range of issues that need to be addressed in terms of women in sport, including what it would take to bring about a change in how it is that women are perceived in society. She said bluntly that in order for more women to pursue sport in the first place, women’s safety within the confines of everyday society needs to be improved so parents would not feel scared to let their girl children pursue sport.
She also spoke about the need to ensure equal pay for men and women, thus touching upon another burning issue in this day and age – that of the gender pay parity that still exists in many stratas of society.
She says that in a corporate set-up, men and women have worked hard to ensure there is no parity in the pay that people receive due to their gender. Manu argues that this is something that is needed in the world of sports as well and it is not something that needs to be delayed – everyone needs to be paid the same.
