After more than two years of ethnic violence in Manipur that has claimed over 250 lives, a step towards normalcy has been taken. The Kuki Zo Council announced the reopening of the crucial National Highway 2 for commuters and goods. Concurrently, a Suspension of Operations agreement has been signed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Manipur government, and Kuki Zo insurgent groups, including the Kuki National Organization and the United People’s Front. The agreement includes a new clause for a time-bound political settlement, with one representative stating, "political solution will be based on negotiated political settlement under the Constitution of India in a time-bound manner." However, the move faces opposition from valley-based bodies like the All Manipur United Clubs organization, who argue the pact threatens the state’s fragile peace.
