In a Rajya Sabha discussion on the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP. Kharge asserted, ‘The work of making Vande Mataram a slogan of freedom was done by the Congress Party,’ contrasting this with the BJP’s ideological ancestors whom he accused of ‘working for the British’. He rebutted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claims regarding the 1937 Congress decision on the song, citing a specific letter from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose to Jawaharlal Nehru. Kharge also highlighted his 55-year political career and criticized the PM for constantly ‘insulting’ Nehru.
