A special NIA court in Mumbai is set to deliver its verdict in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The seven accused facing judgment include former MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit. The explosion on September 29, 2008, at Biku Chowk in Malegaon, killed six people and injured 101 others. The case, initially investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2011. The NIA later dropped charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), stating that the ATS had allegedly used "coercive tactics". The trial proceeded under UAPA and other sections of the IPC. The case has fueled a significant political debate around the term ‘Saffron Terror’, with the accused claiming they were framed and tortured during the investigation.
