Malegaon Blast: All 7 Accused Acquitted, 'Saffron Terror' Theory Under Fire | India Today News

A special court has acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, stating that conviction cannot be based on perception and requires cogent evidence, which was found lacking. The blast on September 29, 2008, killed six people and injured over 100. This verdict is a significant setback for the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), the initial investigating agency. A lawyer for the victims expressed disappointment with the judgment, stating, "It is very sad that the court has acquitted the accused on the account of the benefit of doubt." The victims’ families intend to challenge the acquittal in a higher court. The verdict has also triggered a political showdown, with BJP leaders questioning the ‘saffron terror’ narrative propagated by the previous government, while others maintain that terrorism has no religion.
