West Bengal Police have arrested Mofakkerul Islam at Bagdogra Airport whilst he was attempting to flee following the Malda violence incident where seven judicial officers were held hostage. Police claim the arrested man is a TMC supporter, previously associated with AIMIM, and is described as a close aide of TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee. Photographs have emerged showing the accused with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. The judicial officers, appointed by the Supreme Court to clear pending voter appeals in West Bengal, were gheraoed during the Special Summary Revision exercise. The Election Commission has been maintaining tight security vigilance across West Bengal, with sources confirming that this individual’s name had figured in earlier investigations. The BJP has pointed fingers at TMC connections whilst the state government maintains that law and order is now under Election Commission control. The Supreme Court had been approached regarding the incident involving the judicial officers.
