The Madras High Court has banned a book titled ‘Tiruparan Kundram Issue, Justice G.R. Swaminathan, is he a judge or is he an RSS rowdy?’ which was set for display at the Chennai Book Fair. The court initiated suo moto proceedings against the publishers for making derogatory statements against the sitting judge. Justice Swaminathan had previously permitted the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at Tiruparankundram hill, a decision the book claims was influenced by an ‘RSS agenda’. The court stated that ‘you cannot paint a judge in derogatory manner’ and directed Tamil Nadu police to stop the sale. Reporter Anagha Kesavan highlighted that the book labels the judge an ‘RSS sympathizer’ and ‘RSS rowdy’. The High Court took the publishers to task, noting the title’s defamatory nature. This legal intervention follows the book’s attempt to tarnish the judge’s reputation by questioning his impartiality in the Deepathoon case involving Hindu and Muslim sides.
