In an exclusive interview with India Today, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva discussed the future of Brazil’s diplomatic and economic relations. Speaking during his visit for the India AI Impact Summit, President Lula emphasized his desire for a ‘strong relationship’ with US President Donald Trump, stating, ‘I want to get along also very well with President Trump’ while maintaining Brazil’s sovereignty. He highlighted that Brazil-US trade stands at $80 billion and noted that despite new tariffs, Brazil has not applied reciprocity, opting instead for negotiation. President Lula also advocated for greater multilateralism and the use of local currencies in trade to reduce over-dependence on major powers. Turning to India, he expressed hope for doubling bilateral trade and announced plans to discuss strategic partnerships with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The President underscored that trade must benefit the people of both nations, stressing that no single country should be the ‘winner alone’ in global economic frameworks.
