Lt Gen Hooda (R) On India-China Relations: A 'Gradual Thaw' Or Another Doklam In The Making?

Speaking on India-China relations following the SCO’s Tianjin Declaration, General DS Hooda described the current situation as a ‘gradual thaw’ after ties were strained since 2020. He noted positive steps from the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping, including the resumption of the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra and a mutual understanding to pursue strategic autonomy. However, General Hooda cautioned that significant challenges remain, such as the unsettled border, economic coercion, and strategic rivalry in South Asia. He stated, "I would use the word it’s a gradual thaw. It’s not a grand reconciliation by any standards." On the counterterrorism front, he highlighted that the Pahelgam terror attack found a direct mention in the SCO statement, which he views as a satisfactory outcome for India. The discussion also addressed the persistent trust deficit with China, referencing past incidents like Doklam and Galwan. #indiachina #scosummit #tianjindeclaration #itwebvideos #dshooda #counterterrorism #foreignpolicy #geopolitics #indiachinarelations #borderdispute #pahelgam #modi #xijinping #doklam #galwan #strategicautonomy #indiatoday
