An LPG shortage is affecting restaurants, bakeries, and domestic users across India, with reports emerging from multiple states over the past few days. Restaurants have drastically reduced their menus, with some offering as few as two dishes, while domestic LPG users report difficulty accessing cylinders due to poor regulation by gas agencies. The central government attributes the situation to panic booking and maintains there is no actual shortage, prioritising domestic supply over commercial distribution. State governments have been directed to prevent hoarding and black marketing of domestic cylinders. In Karnataka, domestic cylinders were recovered from commercial establishments. The National Restaurant Association has issued advisories to member outlets on reducing gas consumption. In Mumbai, around 2,500 to 3,000 bakeries have shut down due to unavailability of commercial LPG cylinders, compounded by a Bombay High Court order that banned wood fire and diesel ovens. In Chennai, caterers are using firewood and minimal LPG during the peak wedding season and Iftar celebrations.
