A disruption in LPG supplies, triggered by the war in the Middle East, has pushed restaurants and hotels across India into crisis, forcing many to cut menus, raise prices, and shut operations. Major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chandigarh are feeling the pinch. The Centre has invoked provisions under the Essential Commodities Act to ensure uninterrupted supply for domestic cooking gas, prioritising households over commercial establishments. A 25-day booking gap has been introduced to prevent hoarding. In Bengaluru, the Hotels Association reports that supply of commercial LPG cylinders has almost completely stopped, putting thousands of restaurants at risk. Chennai Hotels Association has written to the Prime Minister requesting uninterrupted commercial LPG supply. In Mumbai, at least 20 hotels and eateries have already shut down. Authorities have stopped supply of commercial LPG cylinders across Punjab and Haryana, restricting them only to essential institutions like hospitals and colleges.
