A commercial LPG shortage is affecting restaurants and hotels across southern India, with establishments in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, and Coimbatore reporting limited stock lasting only 12 to 72 hours. The Centre has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure uninterrupted supply of domestic cooking gas and directed refineries to maximize LPG production by diverting propane and butane streams. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held an emergency meeting with top officials and wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging action to ensure the shortage does not affect commercial establishments or MSME industries. He also requested alternative arrangements for restaurants. Hotels across the region have reduced menu offerings, with some removing items like variety rice, idli, and multiple korma and sambar varieties. The Chennai Hotels Association has written to the Prime Minister seeking uninterrupted supply, emphasizing that the food industry operates 24×7 and supplies to hospitals, IT parks, college hostels, and trains. Hotel associations from Bengaluru and Chennai are scheduled to meet Union Minister for Petroleum Hardeep Singh Puri on March 11 to raise concerns about the commercial LPG shortage.
