Looking Forward: Deepam Row, Who Wins the Explosive Dispute?
On 7 January, a two-judge bench of the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) is set to hear the appeals linked to the Deepam row at Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai.
The case revolves around where the Karthigai Deepam should be lit during the festival. A single-judge bench earlier allowed the Deepam to be lit at a stone pillar known as the Deepathoon, calling it part of tradition. The Tamil Nadu government and other parties challenged this order, raising concerns over history, ownership, and law-and-order issues.
The division bench is now examining whether the earlier order should stand. It will also look at the limits of court directions in religious matters and the role of the state in managing sensitive sites.
