A major controversy has erupted over the Lokpal of India’s decision to procure seven luxury BMW cars, a move sharply criticised by senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram. Chidambaram questioned the expenditure, stating, ‘When honourable judges of the Supreme Court are provided modest sedans, why do the chairman and six members of the Lokpal require BMW cars?’. The anti-corruption body floated a tender on October 16 for seven white BMW 3 Series 330Li M Sport models. The total cost is estimated to be around ₹5 crore, with each long-wheelbase vehicle costing approximately ₹69.5 lakh to ₹71 lakh on-road in Delhi. This has sparked a debate on the priorities of the anti-graft institution, with critics contrasting the purchase with the more modest vehicles reportedly used by some sections of the judiciary and questioning the use of public funds for such high-end vehicles.
