Ukraine says it struck an oil refinery in Russia’s southern Rostov region on Christmas Day using British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles, as the conflict entered a new phase of intensified strikes and diplomatic maneuvering. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported continued operations across multiple targets in Ukraine and claimed control of another settlement in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine acknowledged targeting key Russian energy and military facilities, including ports, oil storage tanks and an air base.
The escalation comes even as diplomatic efforts continue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed discussions with U.S. officials on a draft peace framework, while Moscow said it is reviewing proposals and remains open to further consultations underscoring the sharp contrast between battlefield escalation and fragile diplomatic engagement.
