Trump’s trade advisor, Peter Navarro, has attacked India following a summit meeting between Prime Minister Modi, Russia’s Putin, and China’s Xi. Navarro stated, "It was a shame to see Modi getting in bed as the leader of the biggest democracy in the world with the two biggest authoritarian dictators in the world in Putin and Xi Jinping." This criticism comes amid a tariff dispute, where the United States has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India, partly in response to India’s purchase of Russian oil. Navarro asserted that India thinks it can "have their way" but that President Trump will not allow it. The comments are seen as an attempt to justify the US administration’s stance, even as the US Embassy in India has posted on social media about strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations in September.
