LIVE This Morning: Trump Warns Iran Over Nuclear Deal, Says ‘It’s Going To Be Traumatic’
US President Donald Trump warned Iran on Thursday of "very traumatic" repercussions if it doesn’t agree to a nuclear deal soon. "We need a deal, or it will get very traumatic—I really don’t want that, but it’s essential," Trump stated. He reiterated, "It’ll be extremely painful for Iran without one."
Trump, who is weighing the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East to ramp up pressure on Tehran, pointed to the US airstrikes he authorized against Iran’s nuclear sites amid Israel’s 12-day conflict with the country last July.
"They missed their chance for a deal the first time, and ended up with Midnight Hammer," he noted. "Let’s see if we can strike one now; if not, phase two awaits—and it’ll hit them hard," Trump told AFP. This came a day after hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where Trump expressed hope for progress in US-Iran nuclear talks within the next month.
Netanyahu, however, voiced doubts about any potential agreement’s strength. He had urged Trump during the visit to adopt a tougher stance, especially by addressing Iran’s ballistic missile stockpile in the negotiations. Despite this, the two leaders diverged, with Trump affirming post-meeting that talks must proceed.
