On Friday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah rejected demands for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the alleged murders, rapes, and secret burials in Dharmasthala, emphasizing that the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) is already handling the investigation. Addressing calls from Hindu and Jain seers who met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Siddaramaiah remarked, “The SIT is in place, and they are police officers. The NIA is also staffed by police—what’s the difference?”
The opposition parties, BJP and JD(S), have intensified their push for an NIA investigation, accusing the Congress-led state government of mishandling the case and labeling the allegations as a plot to defame Dharmasthala and its temple.The issue gained traction after Home Minister G Parameshwar questioned the need for central involvement, stating, “We’ve set up an SIT to investigate. Initially, they claimed the SIT probe was inadequate, and now they want it transferred to the NIA. Isn’t that still an investigation?” The controversy erupted following claims by CN Chinnayya, who alleged he had buried multiple bodies, including those of women showing signs of sexual assault, in Dharmasthala over the past 20 years. These accusations, directed at the temple’s management, sparked a political uproar before Chinnayya was arrested for providing false testimony.
